2003 E46 330i sedan, 5speed, sport & premium pkgs
When the light goes on I have around 58 miles left to go, so says the onboard computer. I've had it down to around 15 miles distance-to-empty but never dared go any further than that.

There's still gas in the tank, even with your trip computer counts down to one, followed by four dashes.
Tricks to help keep you from walking:
Slow down.
Turn off the AC and keep the windows up.
Turn off the engine at lights.
Avoid traffic--slow and steady works best.
I've put 16.65 gallons in and will try for 16.7 next time (and to think the tank only holds 16.6 . . . ).

I agree with everything Mark says except turning the engine off at lights. That's a guaranteed way to kill whatever gas you have left! It'd be a better idea to put it in neutral at lights.....
Max I've ever put in is 16.3(last night!!)

According to a recent test, it is more efficient to turn your engine off if you are going to be stopped for more than about 30 seconds. Any less than that and you should leave it on.

I went to 3 miles left yesterday in my 2002 330Ci. Terrified me, but I made it. It's all because I WILL NOT buy Citgo gas. ;-)

Shoot, you can go at least 10 miles past the point where it has 4 dashes on the sreen. Trust me, I do it all the time and have never run out.

You use more petrol turning the car on and off! Thats a fact!
