Traffic & no gas in a 2003 Manual

Driving to my soccer game on I95 is usually a cinch on a Sunday night. Last night, no go. 30 minutes of stop and go traffic, already late, and the gas light is on, with no easy on/off access points, and already past the only rest stop. Drove about 30 miles easy, didn't fill up all the way as it was freezing outside and there was no switch to leave the tank filling on its own, but even though I was worried, turned off the heat & such, the car was fine.
