computer says "- - - -"
I've driven my 2001 325Ci past the point where it says I am out of gas on a few occasions. I've found the "miles till empty" readout decreases rapidly under 10 miles or so. Anyway, on the way back from Columbus, Ohio one day, I went past 0 miles to the dreaded "- - - -" readout. Unfortunately there wasnt an exit with a gas station for a long stretch. I ended up going about 6 miles till I found a station. So I'm pretty confident there's a bigger reserve than they lead you to believe.

On my 1995 M3, you can push a special sequence of buttons on the computer to get additional readouts. When the normal "range" display will give "----" I can switch to a digital readout of exactly how many liters of gas the computer thinks are in the tank. Turns out the gas light usually comes on when it thinks there's about 8 liters, or approx 55 miles of gas left. The "----" comes up at 1-2 liters, and I've actually driven about a mile where the display claimed there were 0.0 liters of gasoline in my tank. O_o
Also on a claimed 14 gallon tank, I managed to squeeze almost 15 gallons in when it's really empty.
