Diesel (TDI)
My Jetta is a diesel and gets roughly 48 to 50 mpg & 750 to 800 miles on a tank. I can probably go 100+ miles after the light comes on, but have never pushed it much beyond 75.

How the hell do you get 800 miles? we get 500 on ours.. before the light goes off.

I agree with the +100, but let's qualify how the Jetta works.
Firstly the light will go on for me when the I have 47 miles left on the trip meter. That is entirely different from when the trip meter reads 0 miles to go before you're empty. I have run for 35 to 40 (VERY NERVE RACKING) miles before finding fuel AFTER the "tripmeter/miles to go before empty meter" reads 0.
I have never run out of fuel, so I am inclined to believe the 100 miles number.
BTW - I drive almost entirely highway 142 mile round trip to work daily drive (with stop and go traffic), and I average 665 miles on a tank...pure highway at 75 MPH would certainly get me higher.

I believe that everyone that claims over 50mpg with their TDI is a liar & anyone that claims mor than 60 a damn liar. The most I have ever got on mine was 52 on the freeway across Nebraska and that was a few years ago before ultra low sulfur fuel came to be. I consistently get 42 driving back & forth to work. (40 miles RT) I have gone as many as 75 after the light turned on.

42mpg on a Jetta TDI is the average if you're traveling between 80-90mph. It's entirely reasonable to assume that you could get the better if you were traveling between 50-60mph, which many hypermilers do. I drive like 80% freeway in my 06 TDI (which has worse mileage than the older models), and I consistently get 620 miles with the better part of a gallon of fuel left. 500 seems to be about when the fuel light goes off though, I've had my fuel light go off in Santa Barbara and make it all the way to Los Angeles with fuel to spare (fumes mind you).
