Nearly Stranded Outside Seattle!

I drove with my boyfriend up from Portland, OR all the way northeast to Spokane, WA to see a friend and we made that trek just fine without any close calls looking for gas. But after leaving Spokane, we decided to drive all the way back west to Seattle to see the sights and hang out, and we thought we wouldn't need to refill our basically full tank along the way. Big mistake.

We made it about 50 miles outside of Seattle when the gas light came on and our fuel gauge was on empty. Yikes. We looked at every road sign for miles and miles, but there didn't appear to be any signs of civilization or gas stations yet along the route. We were screwed. We slowed our speed to around 50-55 mph and turned off our heater, radio etc...hoping to save gas.

Finally after over 35 miles of driving on "E" without a gas station in sight we finally found a small station on the side of the road and pulled over. Trouble was that it was about midnight and all the lights were out and everything looked closed. Crap. But then we noticed it was a newer gas pump that took credit/debit cards and we were no longer in Oregon (where you by law must have a gas attendant pump your gas) so we pulled over, used our card, got our gas and were saved!

Funny thing is though the '99 Toyota Corolla we were driving never sputtered or sounded remotely in distress or out of gas. It probably would have made it all the way into the Seattle city limits before running out of gas, but I wasn't about to risk it. Fun trip nonetheless and a good reliable car.
