Erratic Fuel Gauge

May 8, 2008 about Dodge Caravan

We recently started driving a vanpool to work. Our fuel gauge is extremely non-linear. We have a 20 gallon tank. The gauge has been observed to jump a 1/4 level in less than 20 miles. It will stay on Full for about sixty miles and then jump down. The worst part is that it will stick on 1/4 full for a long time and then jump to near empty. The warning light came on with less than 1 gallon of fuel in the tank! Needless to say, now we just look at the miles travelled between fill-ups and use that as our gauge.

For any questions that you have redgraing interchangeable parts and which parts will fit which different vehicles, talk to the folks at your local wrecking yard. Most wrecking yards are networked with many others across the U.S. and can order most any part you need. They can usually have the part for you within a couple days.
