Due to not paying attention, I recently ran out of gas in my 67 olds 442. A nice fella gave me a ride to the gas station where I inquired about borrowing a gas can. The only option they had for me was to purchase a 1-gallon can for $17. Since I already have a vast collection of $17 one gallon cans at home from my previous dilemmas, I really didn't want to part with that much cash for another can. So I purchased a 1 gallon jug of water for $2. Then I dumped out the water and filled it with gasoline. That did the trick and saved me $15!

If you put gas in the wrong kind of container you risk it melting the container as gas is highly corrosive, and you also risk a fire as gas has flammable fumes that spark very easily. If potentially burning to death is worth saving $15 then go ahead. However, if you want to live and save, then buy the can and keep gas in your car. Having a friend to call to pick up that can you left at home could help too. If you really are a single parent, I hope you have tons of friends like that because being a parent is hard.
It is absolutely illegal to fill up anything other than a government-approved gas can with fuel at a gas station, I don't care how many single mothers out there can't afford $17. Let the attendant or a cop catch you filling up a water jug and you can give me your sob story from a jail cell. Putting gas into a water bottle or any container not approved for gasoline is illegal and if you can't afford a gas can maybe keep one in your car since you can't seem to keep gas in your car. I've always known that this is possible, but I never really had a clue whether a thin plastic water bottle container would be stable, chemically with a petroleum product like high octane gasoline, It would so suck for the plastic to compromise and leak. vapors fire, I always figure it's best to use a regulation container and avoid the hazard but when in a pinch... hell I've used an old army issue metal canteen before and I wouldn't doubt the voracity of a platic us issue canteen either . . . I suppose if I only had a mile or so to go - or if I was on foot, a duart bottle - a thicker one like Power Aid or Pure Tea... but whatever fellas - ya'll need to chew on a xanax or smoke a phatty; maybe the Trump Supporters could light that puppy while filling up their water bottle with a flammable liquid

I came to this site to get info about what container to use for filling gas in a certain container. Actually, I am frightened with the thought of using a water jug or water bottle. I must agree that the $17 is high when compared with a 5 gallon gas can. I, however would never carry a glass container in a vehicle for one major safety reason. Get in a fairly severe car or read end accident and you end up in a burning inferno. $17 for the life of my children seems very reasonable.

You know, I thought you could just use anything for gas, but when I did this at a station I had the police called on me. Turned into a crazy incident where they were concerned about terrorism. The officers and attendant turned out to be pretty cool, but explained my item could be considered a bomb. If you can get away with filling a jug - great. Gas station/garages usually have a shop gas can that you can use for a deposit. Some stations have a pole to store empty windshield washer jugs on. I have also poured a bottle of water in the tank to get an extra mile to the station (water is heavier than gas and lifts the last bit of gas out of the sludge zone up to the fuel pump - you need to add alcohol when you refuel to emulsify the water into the fuel or the water will stay on the bottom and rust the tank)

as a gas attendant, it is illegal to put gas in any container that isnt marked for gasoline and red. The DEC catches you doing it the DEC will fine you and the station and issue up to a 48 hour pump stop, not allowing that station to sell gasoline, it is a HUGE fine far more than a $17 gas can. that being said they AREN'T assholes about it, if you ran outta gas a few minutes down the road and only want enough gas to get your car to the station, if your polite about explaining the situation to them, chances are they would be willing to look the other way this time. but if your an asshole about it, or its obvious you dont need it for emergencies to get your car the 2 or 3 miles to the station or like trying to fill a 5 gallon bucket of it you will get fined.

You can cut the bottom and part of the side from a normal water bottle to use as a funnel so you don't spill any of the precious guzzolene

Hi, so putting gasoline in unsecured, non- ventilated plastic bottle will result in combustion over period of time. Similar to putting alkaseltser tablets in soda bottles. The fumes want to escape and over a period of time will build up so much pressure it'll explode. The legal gas cans have a built in ventilation system and the plastic is durable to withstand the corrosive chemical in gasoline. The plastic water bottles may not be destroyed by the gasoline in minutes, but it will possibly in hours.
Well unfortunately I met Donna’s husband, ran out of gas and the gas station refused to sell me gas since I did not have a gas can only had a 1 gal water container. And tried to sell me a 1 gal can for 25 dollars when i said no to expensive and asked what the hell am I supposed to do the foreign idiot said he is calling the cops. My mind is blow by several things I've read here! 1) Gas is corrosive and will eat through plastic not designed to hold such type of fluids. Yes that's correct, is going to eat through a water bottle in the 30 minutes it takes to get it in your car? Absolutely NOT!! My buddy had has sitting in a small water bottle he used to but gas in his weed eater and it was sitting there for months!!! 2) "Gas has flammable fumes that spark very easy, is the risk of burring to death...blah blah blah". LMFAO first if you think a cop is going to find it important enough to give to ships about you pouring gas in your car from a water bottle when according to many the gas is going in the tank the risk factor is already removed from the equation, then to be extra dramatic pretend you'd be taken to jail for it again LMFAO! Oh and how about pointing the finger at these gas stations selling gas cans for $17-$20 because they know you're screwed and mark the product up 400%. It'd give people no reason to pull these stunts. By the way I've got a gas can in my trunk, along with jumper cables and everyday tools, something my pops taught me as soon as I started driving. Not everyone had a father like mine though.
