Lots Of Miles After Light

December 15, 2007 about Pontiac Vibe

My mother an I were coming back from Las Vegas driving about 70 miles outside of Wickenberg Arizona when our gas light came on. We knew there were no stations from where we were to the outskirts of Wickenberg. I called AAA and asked if they knew anywhere we could get gas but they could only tell us about a Circle K store bout 3 miles passed the city limits. Well we ended up getting 67 miles after the gas light came on and made it to a brand new station that had just opened the week before just outside of town. Thank god for Toyota.

Somehow, I wouldn't depend on this anecdote to get me this far after the low gas light comes on in my Vibe. I'm actually shocked that someone would even try to drive that far. What did they do? Stop and buy a can of gas and then drive as far as they could before putting it in the car? Or did they really drive that far with gas stations few and far between? I think this is a fake story.

Well, assuming the car gets 28 mpg and the light comes on when there's say.. 2 gallons left that's nearly 60 miles right there. If the wind conditions where pushing behind the vehicle and they were doing freeway driving with little change in speed, it's certainly possible to get 67 miles.

I know I'm a little late to the party but thought I'd post my current situation... Just bought my '04 Vibe exactly a month ago, today... With this past weekend being Easter, I completely broke myself 2 days ago! The fuel light came on yesterday so Ive been checking the milage since... So far I'm at 56 city MILES since the light came on... Tomorrow's payday so I'll be pushing 62 miles once I make it to the gas station!! Thinking I should fill the tank up completely and not try this again as it can't possibly be good for it, especially being 15 years old now lol...

A lesson learned many years ago as a teenager, I ran out of gas. My Dads response was, "It doesn't cost any more to run you car on the top half of the tank." So, I'm 70 now and never ran out of gas again as I always filled up around a half tank. Drive smart!
