I drive a 1998 323 IC, My question is do you get about twice the millage on the first half of your tank according to your gage? I know it is just designed for a guide but mine is the worst of any car I have ever owned. I also would like to hear what kind of true gas millage that you get, I get between 20 to 26 miles per gallon. The higher MPG is when I short shift (hard to do in a BMW as they like to live in a higher rev range) but it makes as much as 5 MPG difference.

To answer the question about the gauge. All the cars i have ever driven have a gauge that gos up to half full with about 1/4 of a tank of gas in. I think this is a deliberate design feature as most people never fill the car up fully. It gives you greater accuracy on the fuel gauge when the car is getting close to empty. You will probably find that when you fill it right up the gauge will read full for 100 miles before it starts dropping as well.
I have a 2000 323ci and on european petrol I get approximately 32mpg around town and 40mpg on the motorway, but I do drive quite economically, sad I know! If I put my foot down the mpg can drop by 5 or 10 mpg. I normally get around 400 miles out of a tank. My fuel warning light comes on with an 1/8 of a tank left and I have often taken it to when the computer reads 0 miles left, even once carried on for 5 miles further before I filled up.

Unfortunately, I've tried this mohted with my E46 ('99) and my E39 ('97) multiple times and have never been able to make it work.I'm going to admit to user error' although for the life of me I can't figure out why it would be.
