Ran Out Of Gas :-(

December 14, 2007 about Mazda MAZDA6

I generally do not have a problem driving with the fuel light on. But last year, I actually ran out of gas. I'd been driving a couple of days with the light on, and meant to stop for gas on the way to work (they are cheaper than the stations near work) but forgot. Then I had to drive to another location and went a couple of miles out of my way because I wanted to go to a drug store that had a good deal. I saw a gas station on my way down but decided I'd stop on the way back from the drug store. My GPS sent me a different way than usual, which turned out to be up a rather steep hill. About a block in, my car started to stall. I got it over to the side of the road but could not restart it. I then figured out that going up the hill must have shifted the gas in the tank. Had I gone my normal way, which would have been straight and even downhill, I probably would not have run out of gas (well, until I went uphill on the way back).

The sad part of the story is that I called AAA and they never showed up despite the fact that the place told them that they were on their way. Finally a nice woman in her early 20's (I am a 50 year old male) stopped and asked me if I needed help. She actually had a gas can in her trunk and went and got me gas, and did not charge me for it! I told her I couldn't believe she would stop for a stranger.

As a result of this incident (I was by myself at the time), my wife and kids now are overly cautious when they see the fuel light on. I'm a little more cautious than I used to be, but not to the extent that I'll run to the first gas station as soon as I see it go on.
