When Prius Says Empty, It'S Empty!!

December 14, 2007 about Toyota Prius

I've run out of gas within 1 mile of the light coming on. This has happened twice in the year and a half that I've owned it. Both times, I figured that I had some reserve. I was wrong. Within a mile, or once, in less than one block, I was empty. Luckily, the electric motor, with the help of some passers-by who pushed the car, carried into the nearest gas station. It was, of course, the most expensive in the area.

You have something wrong with your Prius then... I've done 50 miles on the light once, and 20-30 miles commonly. It is an '06

Really? I find that I have 2 gallons left in my car when I get hit with the empty light, and seeing as I average, according to the display, about 50 miles per gallon, I get about 100 miles out of mine. Due to speed fluctuation, though, I'd put it more at 80 miles.

I agree with the author, when the Prius says empty - it is empty. Mine is a 2002 Prius so maybe the newer ones are more "forgiving"

I have a 2011 prius and I go about 50-80 miles after The light starts flashing. I have not ever run out of fuel, The most fuel I have been able to put in is 11 gallons. Side note My drive is 65 miles one way. It's from the Los Angeles area to Ventura. It's by no mean a flat drive. If your going to test the light bring a one gallon gas can, good luck.

There are a lot of things to think about brfeoe buying a new car. The car features enough versatility to fit anyone’s needs, which also makes it practical- not a term all crossovers can use so liberally. Not only will these simple tips help avoid buying a dud, they will also help you to negotiate a better price for the car, which could save your money also.

I think Toyota didn’t like the idea of Prii sitting on the side of the road due to empty fuel tank. Considering it’s only 11.9 gal. Toyota probably decided to have gen2 and newer trick us into refueling before actually needed. Prii on side of road is bad PR. My light goes on with about 2.5 gal of fuel in the tank.
