1981 Rabbit Diesel
I wouldn't take for my '81 Rabbit diesel! Paid $3400 for it 6 months ago and have put about $3000 into it, including new paint job. Constantly getting 55 or 56 miles to the gallon on the highway driving 60mph and have gotten as high as 66mpg driving 55 to 60 with a good tail wind and coasting (taking out of gear)down hills, I think that is called hypermiling. Maybe old but reliable and cheap!

I just bought a 1981 diesel rabbit. Has high miles but is a good runner. Need lots of parts. Have a biodiesel prosessor and make my own fuel.
unfortunately, i don't think Volvo ever put their diesel motros in the station wagons, only in the 4-door sedans. and those stopped being imported about 1985.older diesels such as the Mercedes and Volvos also have issues with burning standard diesel fuel very uncleanly. so if you were worried about polution and couldn't burn biodiesel consistently, you should probably avoid the older cars.virtually every car available in Europe has a diesel version they sell there, and they burn much cleaner. maybe you can special-order a new European car with a diesel powerplant. our rented Citroen minivan/stationwagon crossover had pently of power and got excellent gas mileage (about 60 mpg.)
