+5 Gallons In The Tank On 'Empty'!

December 12, 2007 about Pontiac Grand Prix

When I buy a new car, I always like to know how long I can go after the gas light comes on. My Grand Prix has an 18 gallon tank, and I tested it by filling up the tank as soon as the light came on/it hit the "empty" range on the gauge. It only took 12.5 gallons! I still had 5.5 gallons in the tank when the light came on. That's 30% of the gas still left in the tank when it hits "empty"!

For the last +6 years, I routinely drive for days after hitting the empty line - my average is about 80 miles. I don't want to cut it too close. If I've been driving highway miles, I push it to +100. The gas gauge needle gets below the empty line, but I'm still driving fine. However, it does freak my passengers out some...
