Burned Out The Fuel Pump
Went 15 miles and ran out of gas. Added 3 gallons of gas and it wouldn't turn over. Evidently 1996-1999 Ford Taurus have a nasty habit of burning out the fuel pump when they run out of gas. $400 repair.

my toyota did the same thing, its a 2008. Same issues with every manufacturer. I actualy hate this thing. Worst pice of garbage I have ever owned. I will trade it in for a mustang in about a month. I am tired of going to the dealer.

Gasoline flowing thru the fuel line = cooling for the pump. When you run out of gas the engine stops but the fuel pump runs until you key off. If you keep it running and there is no gas, you burn the pump out. Sooooo.... if you run it out of gas, take the key out until you re-fuel. It's not a stupid design, this is just a result of user stupidity.. If it happened to you, well welcome the the 9 sigma club otherwise know as the gateway to the Darwin Awards. You are so far from normal, you deserve everything you get..

Get rid of a Toyota for a Mustang?!?!? yea, you would burn up your fuel pump. Dune Buster has it down. Fluid type pumps such as oil, fuel, hydraulic etc. use the fluid to keep the pump cool as well as lubricated. Unfortunately however, not many people are aware of this and it will happen to more. Just remember to cut the vehicle off when you run out of gas.
The fuel pump in a toyota might suck when its empty, but i did 300 miles in my toyota townace with no water in and it ran fine until i got stuck in traffic.
I agree with someone else, don't run out of gas!!! You know you're gonna need to get it anyway, so why take a chance. I let mine get as low as possible only once to see how many miles I got on a full tank of gas. My car has 160000 miles on it,and I don't want to pay for any repairs caused by pure stupitidy. Always add more when it runs down to about 1/4th of a tank. Your car will thank you for it.
I agree with everyone who says don't run low on fuel, but dunebuster is wrong. When the engine stalls, the fuel pump does not keep running. It will stop running until you turn the key on again and it only will run for a couple seconds then if the engine doesn't start.
I don't know why people wait till the last minute to fill up ?? It does NOT save you money to wait to fill up. If you have a 1/4 tank left and fill up, it make cost you about $30, If you are totally on empty, it may cost you $35. In any case, whether you fill up when you are running on a 1/4 or an empty tank, you will get the same exact mileage, Don't you people think ?? Idiots man
In Kenya most motorists run very low on fuel so that in case you are car-jacked the thugs wont drive you too far away before the tank is dry.We prefer less than 1/4 tank at any one time so running out of fuel is a normal occurrence

For all the people who read this that think that certain fuel pumps are crap and running your car low (yes low, not even empty) on gas doesn't damage the pump in any way... go out and drain the oil and antifreeze out of your engine and start driving. When it seizes, please come back to this forum and post how crappy your motor is. Fuel is the lubricant and coolant for your pump. Running low or out is the equivalent to running low on coolant and oil for your engine. You are damaging your pump and blaming it on the manufacturer. Use some common sense... keep you tank above 1/4!
People talk about common sense and the like, I'm not blaming anyone except the person that took my gf car out for a joy ride, and put it back with an empty tank, and didn't say anything. So we go to start her car the next day (remote start, like usual) and bam, no gas, put some in there, nothing, so its burned out. I'm not saying that accidents don't happen. I think people should learn about something before they do it. I would like to learn to weld. Since I have never done it, I should probably learn something about welding before attempting it. Remember, at the beginning of this article, people are blaming the pump and bitching about it. I had the old style taurus at first.Trade in for the new style 2008. First problem, the back driver side sound like it was felling off. Dealership said it was the brakes and something else,ok i still had to keep taking it back.Still makes a loud nosie.Now the front sounds like its felling apart when you put on the brakes. the dealership say that the taurus just has a bad brake system.I LOVE MY taurus when i first got it, but now i would not tell no one to but a Taurus.it sounds like a pile of JUNK.

my moms sister ran her car out of gas and the fuel pump does work but its coming appart inside because we thought maybe the fuel tank had crap on the bottom and the prescreen had a hole in it but it didnt and after all that work come to find out the pump was run dry but always running 1/4 tank melts the pump to because the pump is only about half covered in fuel so they still get hot just takes longer to melt down because they always have fuel
I got my first car (used) with 130,000 miles. After driving it for 8 months (20,000 added miles) always on an empty tank, the fuel pump died. 400 dollar replacement :|... i dont know about the rest but driving on a empty tank for me was not really a choice, it had something to do more with the lack of funds for fuel. But yeah dont learn the hard way and put gas to your car! btw my car is not a ford, i got nothing against ford, my car is a mitsubishi galant.
It's funny how everyone here is making remarks about users. If anyone here ever had to support users in their daily life they would sound like idiots. It's a bad design, because I don't think a use case exists where if you run out of fuel the car dies. If one does then they are idiots, for poorly supporting their users needs. If not then it's bad design.

Lots of missinformation here. Runing out of fuel will not burn out the pump motor. The 1980's through 1990's fuel pump systems were of course first generation and things were learned. The pump motor brushes were the cause for the pumps failing. An open circut. A comment above: Running out of fuel will ruin the catalitic convertor.... I'm sorry but that's WTF. A catalytic convertor will burn up (melt) by having excessive and unberned fuel entering the exhaust system caused by, for instance, a thermostat that has failed and is partially stuck open. This prevents the coolant from reaching proper coolant temperatures, usually 192 degrees. A stuck thermostat will lower the coolant temps (even just to 180 degrees, and force the PCM to deliver excessive fuel. That cannot happen when a tank runs dry.

its just funny that in europe i never heard of a failing/burned fuel pump but once (and my stepfather even had a car-dealership/gm-repairshop.) why would u run your car empty? there is a display to prevent running out of fuel in the first place, so no design flaw. idling (like almost everyone is doin over here) heats up the pump, since there is only minimal fuel-flow. remote start? what for? can your car drive alone?? if its to cool/heat, there are sollutions that work without the need to run the engine.... anyway it comes down to USER fault.
My friend ran out of gas one time but she drove a chevy tahoe, I realize, totally different car but my point is, and I am in no way a mechanic, that when the car ran out of gas the car wouldn't start anymore even once gas was put back in. So after about a week or two of obviously mis informed people who didn't really know about cars couldn't figure out the problem one car smart guy says it's probably just a fuse and sure enough when she ran out of gas it blew this fuse and that's all it ended up needing, simple and cheap! So could this possibly be the issue and not the fuel pump???

Ford suvks.I had 3 fuel pumps.Twice in the year,my fuel pump burned out and I had gas in my tank.Ford and Firestone really suck. .
All manufacturers use the same pump design. If you cavitate the pump by running it out of gasoline you will burn out the fuel pump regadless of brand. If you are going to continually run your vehicle low on gas use a little marvel mystery oil mixed with your gasoline to help lubricate the pump. This will help prolong the life of your fuel pump. If you have to replace your fuel pump use a new pump made by a reputable company like Bosch, AC Delco or Motorcraft.
I personally have a Ford and I am not happy with it. I am trying everything I can to get it back in top shape because I confess, I am guilty of letting it go. When I have managed to replace everything, I will let you know if it was my own stupid error of poor maintenance or the manufacturers fault. I say it was my own fault. We cant blame our vehicles for our mistakes.....

All cars with modern electronic fuel injection have high pressure pumps usually located in the tank so the gas can cool and lubricate the pump. Take away the gas and leave the ignition on you will burn out the pump. I have known of Chevys, Toys, Hondas, Nissans and other cars that this has happened to. When you run out of gas, turn the key off and get some gas. Do not try to restart until you have put gas in the tank. If you really want to have fun, run out of gas, turn the key off, blow air into the tank and turn the ignition back on. With luck the tank will remove itself from the car in an explosion making it a lot easier to replace the fuel pump.

If you do run your fuel tank excessively low and are at the filling station dont immediately fill up but park for 10 minutes or so to let the fuel pump cool off. Then proceed to put the first 3 gallons in slowly and this will prevent the cold fuel from causing rapid temperature change inside the pump which will definetly cause internal wire breakage in the pump over repeated cycles. This is especially true for Chevrolets. Many failures occur for this exact reason and when the vehicle comes in on the hook,the fuel tank is usually full for this reason. Also if the fuel pump does quit,booting the bottom of the tank will usually start the pump to run the vehicle long enough to move it into the shop under its own power!
You will need to reset the inertia sciwth. This is found in the passenger side under dash at floor under the carpet or in the passenger side kick panel. This needs to be reset after fuel pump replacement. Then check the fuel pump fuse to make sure it is good.

Even if the fuel tank is low on fuel, the fuel is still flowing through the pump assembly thus removing heat without the fuel pump being submerged.

I owned 3 cars and would drive a different one for a week and then garage it after a carwash. Apparently during that one week of storage the pump would run dry and I had to replace the fuel pump in the Taurus. However when I ran out of gas with my Toyota Camry the catalytic converter failed.
For my 2013 SX4, I try to only gas up once a calendar month, but in the Winter it's hard to go more then 2 weeks before getting low. My gas tank is 50 litres and when the gas light comes on there should be 1/5th left. And then I get gas. That's not bad, eh? Lief from Winnipeg
I have a 1996 GMC sierra 4x4 and it ran OUT of gas on remote start, the truck sits on the side of the house parked until I.need.to use it. My kid starts my remote start in the am so I can take him to school. I went out.to.start my truck that when I last.checked.had 1/4 tank (yes I should havefilled it.but.I don't have $80 to.fuel a vehicle we aren't driving), I turn the key and crank it over and it.won't start. I see the gas gage is BELOW E, so ii am out of gas. I add gas and it.still won't start. Uh oh I put.gas in and it still won't start. Now I figure crap, a fried pump. But I nope have no power through relay, and.the related fuses are all ok. WTF.... So other than being an idiot, can anyone say what the uck is wrong? PS my son apologized saying he has STARTED THE TRUCK MANY TIMES by mistake in the morning.
Replace the relay and and turn on key and listen to hear if the fuel pump is running! or try to start it.

WHAT I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND, is when the vehicle runs out of gas and stalls, with the. Loss of fuel pressure, the pump should shut off. Well not only did it run out of gas, but the truck blew fuses for ac radio, and turn signals. Replaced pump, changed fuses but it took out my radio my Kennwood krc608, and the af coil won't energize unless I jump af relay #30 to #87 oh and the gas gage won't read. Also no power to fuse #8 or #14. Truck now starts and runs. I replaced radio that actually fried the microswitches for activation when the faceplate goes to play position. Haven't solved fuse problem or ac coil prob. Yes it has Freon and also I have blower and vent activation.
Sure a lot of angry people on hear , I think it's a bad design I wish they put the pumps back on the engine an further more even out climbing hills with a 1/4 of a tank the pumps are in the middle of the tank and all the fuel is in the back same when you come back down the mountain my 93 ford has a 30 gal tank and pump is 6 inches high so really I need a hundred bucks in there at all times just to keep pump cool eh why do need all that extra gas when I can't use anyway it's extra weight and probably don't help during a collision just my 2 bits and to the guy who posted go on utube the guys post replies are just trying to help u Pay it forward people !

First thing to do is determine if it is misnisg fuel of spark or both when it will . If it is just misnisg fuel, concentrate on this area.If it is misnisg Spark, it is most likely a ignitiion module(most common)If it is misnisg both, could be a bad or computer. You can scan the yourself and see if there are any codes stored that might give a hint as to what is triggering the probelm. Here is how:

Regarding some of the post I've read above, I would like to thank the few who have taken the time to research and share there findings and experiences, yes keeping more fuel in your tank keeps your pump cooler and keeps it from starving for fuel like going up or down hills with less than a quarter tank bad idea especially on long trips that require two or three tank fills to your destination. N Not on , then can be droven period. Fords fault , it is dangerous and a fault that burns wires, the had extended warranty cause they know its there fault and costs waay to much $$$$ its not a small part and is unsafe ! They want 1,000 on each Ford alive cause they know it has to break. All owners on used or new cars must come together and go on the news and tell the world about Ford doing this and putting people in danger. they changed the pumps often and had recals proving they know of the issue. If we all came together we can force recall on all fords any year and miles.

If you have to pump and give bottles part of the time, try to nurse on demand whenever you are available. Pump after nursing or when you are away from home. Avoid giving bottles if you are on hand to nurse. That will increase or maintain your milk supply best. As for getting more milk from pumping, how much you can pump tends to vary from one woman to another. If you aren't getting as much as you'd like, it can help to get a better quality pump, like a hospital-type electric pump. Those can be expensive, but some communities will rent or loan pre-sterilized ones. As your local LaLeche League or lactation consultant.

Quit calling people idiots because they don't know that a devious design has been put into fuel pumps for quite some time now that causes them to break down and quit running after you run out of gas. Even very smart people run out of gas. Fuel pumps used to run and have no problem if you ran out of gas but now they break down if you run out of gas. They call this an improved design. Who is it improved for? Obviously the people who make money selling you fuel pumps. It is a devious and evil design that's full of shit and the people who are victims of it are not to be blamed. Those who call them stupid prare probably voting for Hillary.
I'm just kind of a Mama... not really in any type of catreogy. I'm just Sugar Mama ;o) I do use re-usable bags at the grocery store, but I also use a ton of ziplock bags for school lunches. I do try to buy some foods organic, but I also let my kids drink Kool-Aid. I'm all for moms doing whatever works for their family. And it sounds like you are doing exactly what is right for yours. :o)
I found myself here because I wondered if a fuel pump could run without pumping any fuel. I have a dead car, gas in the tank, good fuel pump, good? enough battery. I wanted to make sure it would pump with my whole using vacuum cleaner cord, only hooking up 2 of 5 wires, etc. It did indeed run, I ran it maybe 30 seconds on my garage floor, realized it was sucking, not, pushing. At least you know you can run it 30 seconds dry without doing any one hour damage. I thought more the point was you did not want it to run empty because you are going to suck up sediment.
