running your car low is a bad thing. Most fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel in the tank. I ran my car low and now I have to change the pump.Dont be lazy...fill it up!!!

Running your tank completely empty not only can damage your car as above, but sucks up deposits and other shit that collects in the bottom of your fuel tank and runs them through your fuel system.

Wrong on both points. Most cars these days have the fuel pump inside a container that holds the fuel thats sent back to the tank via the return line. It empties into the container and thats the only fuel thats in direct contact with the fuel pump. It does cool the pump but it only holds about a quart of fuel. The only way you will damage your pump is if you run your car completly out of fuel. When it runs dry, the pump will start heating up and it can burn it out. The fuel also aids in lubricating the pump. To prevent that, most cars will stop the fuel pump from operating when the oil pressure drops below a set point. You would have to run it empty frequently or keep trying to start the car after running it empty to hurt the pump. The pump will not suck up the deposits at the bottom of the tank either - there is a strainer on the inlet of the pump that removes all of the large sediment and the fuel filter after the pump that removes the rest of the contaminates. It may clog up your filter prematurely but it wont cause any damage to the rest of your fuel system. While driving, most of the sediment thats in your tank will get stirred up anyways...
