Fuel Pump Failure

December 17, 2007 about Pontiac Vibe

My 2005 Pontiac Vibe had exceeded the 36,000 mile warranty by May 2006 when I was driving through Massachusetts on my way to visit a friend in Vermont. I happened to be in the middle of a driving rain on a Sunday no less when the engine stopped running and then refused to start. I called for help, got a tow to a general repair shop, then made arrangements to get a ride back home to Connecticut. When I got a call from the shop the next workday, I found out that the problem was a faulty fuel pump. Specifically, it was a manufacturing defect. He said that there was service bulletin about it, but that the Pontiac motor division of General Motors had not advised the owners of these cars about it. Apparently, they were content to let these fuel pumps fail some time after the warranty expired so that they would not suffer any negative monetary consequences.
