Going After Gone

December 22, 2007 about Hyundai Santa Fe

I saw the 20/20 episode on this story and decided to test it for myself. I usually let the gas go until the light comes on anyway, so this was easy to do. On my way home from work on 12/18/07, my gas light came on and I was EXCITED! I was less than 2.5 miles from home so I wasn't worried at this point. I kept the mileages under 60 (that's my usual speed--sorry I don't have a lead foot), so I can get as accurate number as possible. Posted speed limit is 55 mph for most of the highways I travel to and from work and other daily travel. Anyway, I left for work on 12/19/07 which is 28 miles round trip. I filled my gas can after I left work that evening, not sure when I'll run completely empty (after two days in my car, the gas fumes where not very nice--I rode with the windows cracked for two days in winter weather to do this test). On 12/20/07, I was at 50.2 miles and still going. This time I traveld 22 miles round trip for work + I made 3 stops in my and around my work area . The final day was on the morning of 12/21/07. At this point I was at 64.5 miles and the car stopped while ideling at my home (I was very happy for that and not stopping on the highway or someplace else I wasn't familiar with).

Well, that's my story of my test and now that I know exactly how much gas is left in my tank after the gas light comes on, I re-fill when the light comes on anyway. I got a lot of flack from my co-workers that I'm "messing" up my engine by letting gas tank deposits enter the engine and that could cost me a lot of money with the mechanic. BUT I HAD SO MUCH FUN LIVING ON THE EDGE IN MY SANTE FE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~;0)
