How Far At What Speed

June 24, 2007 about Honda Accord

As a Commercial Boat Captain you learn to drive your boat using the fuel gauge & tachometer. There is a curve that pushed too far consumes great quantities of fuel with only a slight speed gain. The same with my Accord at 65 mph I get 26 mpg. At 53 mph using cruise control I get 34 mpg. A 24% (if my math is right) increase. So when my fuel light comes on and I am not just in town I know that if I need to I can make it to the next cheap gas if I add 10 minutes to my time schedule and slow down.

Yup cruise control is nice- I hear manual transmission saves a bundle also. However, I don't advise cruise control, because you may be paying more attention to that instead of the road-and where I come from-Western New York-You might hit a deer...or perhaps a person if you're real stupid. Manual could be the same for the new timers-I don't own one myself, but now that I've learned that they are more efficient, I wish I had a Manual Chevy S-10-because it can hold loads.

I went 566 Miles in My 2000 Accord. I forgot I had to fill up because I have a picture of my kids covering my gas gauge. I think it is because I have a manual and I dont really use the AC too often. Also I try to keep the trunk empty. I also LOOOOVE my honda!

I don't quite know how you got 24% but, if your talking about % increase of Gas mileage as compared, 34 MPG is a 30.769% increase from 26 MPG.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people in gas guzzlers continue to violate speed laws while complaining about how much they spend on gas.

I have a 2010 Toyota Prius and the best fuel economy I have gotten is 92.1 mpg. that is cruising at about 40 mph with Cruise control and using the battery only for short distances in little towns I traveled thru, still maintaining about 40 mph. Even my Toyota dealer had trouble believing it, until I showed him the photos I took of the instrument panel showing the mileage, average speed and fuel economy. These reading occurred over 47 miles and 70 mile trips. (the second trip was ONLY 91.8 mph) I never get below at least 50 mpg regardless of speed or distance. Winter or Summer. Secondary roads or interstates.

I’d like to see a bit more aggression and a positive sell – the NBN is a great policy, as with the GFC success, and the benefits should be hammered home at every oprtitunpoy, especially as it’s something 99% of the population can identify with.
