Paranoid Fuel Gauge

May 8, 2008 about Nissan Xterra

If there's one thing that 1st-Gen Nissan Xterra owners know is that the vehicle isn't great on mileage. It's just something you don't talk about with the Xterra. I drive a V6 w/manual transmission. (Lord help you if you bought a 4-cylinder Xterra.) I made it a point to explore some of the extremes of the vehicle over the past few months.

On several consecutive occasions I drove until the fuel light came on and immediately (within 2-3 miles) went to go fill up. I could reliably pump in anywhere between 15-16 gallons once the fuel light came on. On V6 Xterras the fuel tank is just shy of 20 gallons so once your tank gets under the 15 gallon mark is when the fuel light usually will decide to come on.
