Shock! 5 Miles After Flashing Light, Empty!
I've driven my 2008 Prius as far as 30-40 miles after the light started flashing on 3 or 4 occasions with no problem. But at 10:15 at night out 25 miles from Topeka, Kansas, the light started flashing, and I assumed (as planned) that I would easily make it to Topeka to get gas. Right at 5 miles later it ran out of gas. Shock! What use is THAT warning light? The manual specifically says that when the light flashes you have approximately 3 gallons left in the tank - that would be well over 100 miles in the Prius no matter what the conditions. And when the car ran out of gas it didn't SAY it was out of gas - it had flashing warnings that indicated "malfunction in the hybrid system", and the manual expressly warned not to attempt to drive the vehicle with that warning illuminated. Not a pleasant night. What's more, my Prius computer said I was averaging over 41 mpg (into a big headwind), and I was at 410 miles when it ran out which means I hadn't used 10 gallons yet, and the specs say the tank holds 11.9 gallons, so by that cross-check I should also have had plenty of gas.
As a matter of your own safety and the safety of others, never let a Prius get down to the warning light flashing - keep it full enough that it never gets there. Tell anyone with a Prius that you know. The worst part is that the warning light is grossly inconsistent: most of the time you may indeed have a couple of gallons left; SOMETIMES you will have almost no gas at all. Like an alarm clock that works MOST of the time.

I had the same exact situation happen to me. I was with both my children in the car and on my way to pick up my special needs daughter from the bus stop and I thought I had at least a gallon and half left and I only had to drive seven miles to get home. Never made it.I stalled in a major intersection and a state trooper had to drive me home. However, my SN daughter was left in school w/ her teacher until my husband left work to pick her up. So now when the light starts flickering I don't wait.
In driving my 2005, I've noticed an occasional hiccup in the fuel gauge: if I put in a gallon or two, the gauge may not register the change. This happened again on a recent trip where I was headed to a state where gas was 15 cents cheaper. I was on the last mark on the gauge so I put in two gallons. The gauge never changed, but I drove 112 miles to reach a station across the state line without the blinking indicator coming on.
The only time the fuel gauge can ever truly be accurate in a Prius is when the tank is completely full and it is allowed to calculate the mileage left with out guesstamating how much you put in. Consider the following example: You have half a tank. You add 1 gallon this fill up, drive a few miles, add 2 more, drive a bit add another half gallon and continue in this fashion for a week or two or 3. Each partial fill only adds to the margin of error of the last. Until (based on your average mileage) it no longer has any reasonable idea just how much is really in the tank. Sure it has an actual level sensor, but considering the signal bias built in to account for things like the lean caused by the crown of the road, hills and turns, to preven a wildly jumping reading from normal driving, (think of fuel in the tank sloshing like your coffee cup,) it's not surprising how a chronically low/partially filled car could estimate wrong given the proper scenario. I had the same experience this week with a 2008 Prius. The gauge was on two bars, moved to one bar and then almost immediately started flashing. I was on the 401 highway in Ontario and I was close to a service centre, where I planned to fill up. But within minutes it ran out of gas. Fortunately I had enough electric power to get off at an exit, called Toyota roadside service and got enough gas to get me to the service centre. Pretty shocking to run out of gas on a highway, especially when minutes before I'd had two bars on the gauge. From now on will never let it get below three bars. - Toronto, Canada June 2012
