The Gas Light Isn'T Really On Until It Wont Go Off

September 11, 2007 about Toyota Tacoma

So I am perpetual driver of fumes. I also have a very short commute to work and I dont worry about running on empty. My Tacoma (2001 6 cylinder) has a float in the tank that turns the light on the dashboard on. so when you stop hard or go around a long corner the gas in the tank flows forward and re-floats the float and either dims the warning light or out right turns it off. So If i know that I can still get it to shut off, I am definately ok for a few more commutes to or from work (it is really short, I am not kidding). Being a responsible adult, when I get to the point where no amount of braking or going down a steep hill will shut the light off, I start to consider going to the gas station (I still might run for a while though). I have had my truck for 6 years and only ran out of gas once when I wasnt paying attention. But even then I was able to coax enough juice out of the tank to restart the engine and drive at a very high rpm in first gear for some spead and then coast in neutral to a gas station and park in front of a pump where the engine finally went totally dry and my truck wouldnt start up. I was in front of the pump and I filled it back up so does that technically count as running out of gas??? I dont think so, clean record, no asterix!!!
