Zero Miles Remaining
I have never ran out of gas and I didn't plan on this being the first time either, but after I kept putting it off it came a point where I totally forgot and I was traveling on the highway with at least 5 miles to go before the next exit.
I drive a 2010 Ford Fusion SEL 4cyl. I usually keep the "miles to go" on the dashboard. I look at that more than I look at the actual fuel gauge. When we realized that the dashboard was telling us we have only a few miles left to go we panicked. We shut everything off; the radio, the heat, in order to save on gas. The exit sign said 5 miles ahead and we had less than 2 left for gas (so the fusion told us).
I would say that we traveled probably 3-5 miles on zero before we were able to get gas off the next exit. The car didn't act as if the fuel was low, but I am thankful we didn't have to go much further.

0 is like the low fuel light... You still have miles to go. I have gone 30 miles on 0 before it started showing signs (on bends) and I was on my way to fill up anyway.
About to find out. Stuck in traffic on the rouge river bridge in Detroit with 0 miles on the dash for 10 minutes. .......just drove to Southfield and got gas. Id say 5 miles before I got gas.
thank you for this wonderful insghit. These are the opinions of the crosscut of Massachusetts' society. They seem to? be greatly pleased by the abundance of cheap plastics, mediocre leather and interior design lifted off of 2000 Jetta. They are dropping their jaws at the ability of an average GPS to find maps, points of interest, and gas stations with price stickers or as the rest of us call it- pretty much what every GPS had been doing for the last 7 years. And these folks are from MIwhat?
Yeah I use to freak when I would get near zero, but now I relax and just ride it out.
I live in Los Angeles and my fear of running on low is that we will have a major earthquake and the feeling stations will be out of commission and I won't be able to refuel my car.
Thanks for the insight guys. I work in Washington, DC and live in MD almost 40 miles from my home and when I got to work, this morning, the dashboard said 41 miles left. I've been panicking all day until I read these comments. By the way, I left my wallet at home with all of my credit cards and cash so I couldn't stop on the way in or on the way back home.
I've went 6 miles back to my house to get gas money from taking my kids to school and now I'm on here so I hope it starts and makes it there gas station is close
I just drove my 2012 Fusion for about 30 miles after it being on 0 to E. I had forgotten that I needed gas. I didn’t have any trouble.
I have done at least 15 miles after my odometer shows zero gas left on my 2010 Fusion. Today i have 1 mile left on my 2013 Fusion, i am crossing my fingers. Will figure out soon, should be fine.
I'm reading this as I'm driving and praying that I make it to the gas station. I have been on zero for at least 10 miles. and yes, I made it to gas station!!!
Arrived to work with the gas mileage showing 0 to Empty. Left work and drive two miles to a gas station. No problems with the car.
2013 Kia Soul says 0 miles to empty and I had to sit with car running for 10 mins and I’m hoping I make it 8 miles to store
I understand your thinking about why you would turn everything off to save gas. If its a gas burner the radio would not effect the mpg of the vehicle. It might effect it very little if it was an EV but it would be so small you wouldn't notice it. You would notice it if in your EV you had some monster power sucking sound system.
