07 Impreza Limps Through Tunnel, Down Hill To Gas.
I could go for at least 70 miles in my old Ford Focus after the gas light came on, so when I got a new Subaru Impreza and the gas light came on, I wasn't too worried about stopping to fill up before heading to work.
As I make my way into the 1.1 mile long Liberty Tunnels here in Pittsburgh, I start accelerating up to the 55-60mph or so that people normally cruise through them at. When I hit around 55, I notice my car has no power. That's because I'm out of gas! I put my hazard lights on, start praying to Gods that I don't believe exist, and put the car in neutral - hoping that I will be able to coast to the end of the tunnel before my car stops. Nobody wants to be the asshole that runs out of gas in the middle of the Liberty Tubes during rush hour causing a traffic jam for miles.
Luckily, I made it to the end of the tunnel, coasting back into daylight at about 15-20mph. I pull over into a small open space and stop. I sit for a minute, plotting my next move, then try to start the engine again. It starts! I turn the wheel right towards PJ McArdle roadway and start rolling when I lose power again. I keep rolling down the small incline and stop at the light. When it turns green, the engine won't restart, I let off the brakes and silently apologize to everybody around me as I roll into the intersection, slowly accelerating up to a blistering few miles per hour. I make a left down Arlington Avenue and pick up speed - heading to the bottom of the hill and the Exxon station I desperately need! I stare at the light, praying again to whomever that it doesn't turn red before I coast through the intersection. It doesn't, and I roll up to the closest pump at the gas station.
Disaster averted! And only a few minutes late for work..
